Forecast Lab: turn matchup context into a probability

Enter two teams and adjust the conditions. The lightweight model changes its weights by sport, then explains the factors that had the greatest effect.

What to analyze before making a pick

BASKETBALL · WARRIORS / LAKERS / KINGS STYLE

    Start with possession economics.

Estimate pace, then examine where shots come from. A team can look efficient in a small sample while relying on unsustainably hot three-point shooting. Turnovers and offensive rebounds determine who gets more chances.

    FOOTBALL · CALIFORNIA GAME PLAN

    Separate repeatable efficiency from highlights.

Explosive plays matter, but early-down success and pressure without blitzing are more stable clues. Add travel, rest, offensive-line health and weather before assigning confidence.

    BASEBALL · ONE-GAME VOLATILITY

    Build from pitcher to bullpen.

Compare starter repertoire to the opponent’s handedness and contact profile. Then ask whether high-leverage relievers are available. Even a strong read should carry modest confidence in a single baseball game.

    SOCCER · CHANCE CREATION

    Possession without penetration can mislead.

Look for box entries, shot locations and transition opportunities. Teams that dominate the ball may still be vulnerable when their fullbacks advance and the first press is broken.

    Why this belongs here

Forecasting began before the opening whistle.

Energy teams forecast production from physical conditions. Sports teams forecast performance from tactical and human conditions. The inputs differ, but the discipline is the same: build a baseline, adjust for context, measure uncertainty and update when new information arrives.

    Frequently asked

    Forecasting without false certainty

Is the Forecast Lab using live team data?

No. It is an educational, client-side model based only on the values you enter. A publishable game preview should refresh official availability, schedule and performance data close to game time.

    Why does volatility reduce confidence?

When outcomes depend heavily on low-frequency events—three-point shooting, turnovers, finishing or a single pitching mistake—a small edge is less reliable.

Does a 60% forecast mean the team will win?

No. It means the model would expect a similar team to win roughly six times in ten under comparable assumptions. The remaining four outcomes are not model failures; they are part of the probability.

    Is this betting advice?
