“One of the things we look for at California Solar in giving is to make a real impact. This project not only educates and provides a service, but points to a positive alternative to fossil fuel.” notes Lars Ortegren, California Solar Director of Operations.Environmental attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has joined the action at Standing Rock. In her presentation, Parkes referenced a portion Kennedy’s recent talk: “This is kind of the spear-tip of the frontline in the battle over the transition from an old energy economy to a new energy economy.” On December 3, the US Army Corps of Engineers delivered good news to the thousands of protesters camped out at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation: Construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline would be halted. This diplomatic action was taken just prior to the arrival of thousands of Veterans, expected to participate in the protest on December 4-7. The proposed pipeline would have carried crude oil underneath Lake Oahe, a dammed-up part of Missouri River and the main water source for the reservation. In support of the Oceti Sakowin water protector camp next to the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, California Solar Electric Company built a mobile solar power station.
Nevada County Stands with Standing Rock
In support of the Oceti Sakowin water protector camp next to the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, California Solar Electric Company built a mobile solar power station. Designed and constructed by the California Solar team, solar installer Laura Parkes attended the fundraising event November 19 at the Grass Valley Elks Lodge. This event was held to raise funds for those opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Parkes explained the importance of renewable energy as a solution to environmentally damaging fossil fuels. The solar system was delivered to Standing Rock in the last days of November by Nevada County volunteers, where it is serving as a power resource station. The solar power station allows journalist Myron Dewey of Digital Smoke Signals to continue reporting by providing a much needed source of electricity for mobile phone and laptop recharging, as well as other essentials.
